Vickie Smalls, also known as Nowhere Comix on Instagram is an innovative pioneer in the Providence art scene not just for their published artwork, but their ability to provide a sanctuary for likeminded creatives to congregate. Smalls, describes themself according to their website, as an "artist, writer, horror head, spooky bitch, and graf enthusiast." Whether it's their original drawings, or their comic series repeating themes of body horror, the occult, dysphoria, and ghosts living and dead, are all prevalent. What originally drew me to them actually was not their artwork, which I later found to align with my gothic tendencies; but rather their 'Drink and Draw' series, they host at local dive bar Deadbeats. Vickie's deft craftsmanship in the industry in tandem, with their passion for community building imparts a powerful impact.

At 22, Smalls moved back in with their family in "buttfuck nowhere Massachusetts" after a stint living in Los Angeles. They found solace in utilizing their artistic skills they learned through self-taught experiences, and in doing so created the webcomic "Nowhere Comics" which skyrocketed with positive connotations. Since then, their creative prowess significantly improved, leading to more methodical and intentional art practices. As they matured, so did their work. But at the end of the day, they still can appreciate a good dick joke. Which is ironic because when I attended one of their 'Drink and Draw' events, I had drawn a picture of someone putting an ignited lighter near their penis, which they actually posted on their Instagram, and I thought that was really cool! The 'Drink and Draw' series nurtures an environment for artists which delivers a sense of strong fellowship.
Vickie's distinguished catalogue of work is exemplarily of the indie horror sub-genre with notable pieces such as "The Black Apple," and "Girl Hell." To provide a more in-depth analysis of each, to start, "The Black Apple," is a visionary anthology series spearheaded by Jamison King and co-produced by PVD Horror. In this development, Vickie acts as primary editor, which they state is a pleasant deviation to their typical role as an artist. Next is "Girl Hell," which Vickie states that the first issue is on the horizon to be printed. For context, this succession encompasses the subject matter of a sequence of fucked-up dreams Vickie had between the winter of 2023, and summer of 2024. It also circumscribes elements of gender dysphoria, romantic obsession, the Jungian concept of the shadow, and Benadryl abuse.

As for what's in store for Vickie on their artistic journey, they would like to be in a space where their art is self-sustaining. In addition to their aesthetical excursions, Vickie would also find enjoyment in continuing to uplift those in the Providence art scene. Lastly, in the short-term, they would like to improve their technical skills in drawing feet. To stay up to date with Vickie and their artwork, follow their Instagram!
